The present study offers an insight into consumer behavior during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (lockdown). It focuses on the use of social media by Italian and Slovak consumers as well as the influencing mechanism of social media. The research was conducted through a questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated and translated into Slovak and Italian. Statistical software programs Statistica, Gretl and MS Excel were used to process the data collected from respondents.

Results showed that, in both groups, Facebook and Messenger were the most popular social media. They were followed by Instagram and YouTube. The differences between Italy and Slovakia in the ranking of these media are mainly related to the intensity of their use. In general, the analyzed groups prioritize social media that allow confidential exchanges between people who know each other well and convey individual brands. This is probably a reflection of the need to create and strengthen interpersonal bonds during the dramatic experience of social distancing caused by the pandemic.

Another interesting finding was the preference for social media that allow personal visibility and communication. This is probably related to the current narcissistic trend in society. In both cases, these social media are viewed as tools for improving one’s self-image and increasing the sense of community.

The study also revealed that younger Slovaks are more active in the use of social media than older ones. This is probably because they have better access to the Internet. In addition, they have higher digital literacy and more experience in the use of the Internet. This makes it easier for them to learn how to use different platforms. They can also benefit from the free training that many of these websites offer. The use of these platforms is particularly high among teenagers, who are eager to share their experiences with their friends and acquaintances. In addition, they can get valuable information about the latest trends in technology and society. It is, therefore, important for them to be able to make informed decisions when choosing the platform they want to use. They also need to be aware of how their activities on the Internet could impact their lives and their safety. These risks include cyberbullying, identity theft, and the risk of sexting. They can also be affected by the content they receive on social media and the advertisements they see. In some instances, they may even be influenced by political propaganda that is being spread on these platforms. In addition, they should also be aware of the privacy settings that are available on these platforms.
